Discover the Hectors Dolphins

Banks Peninsula is one of the few places you can see one of the smallest marine dolphins in the world.  They are less than 1.5 meters in length and can live up to 20 years. Females only have 4-5 calves in a lifetime. Calving usually happens between November and February.

Delight in New Zealand Fur Seals

The NZ fur seal dives deeper (200 meters) and longer (10 minutes) than any other fur seal. Pups are born in November to January. Back in the 1800's they were hunted to the brink of extinction. Since their protection in 1978, their numbers seem to be recovering.

The best place to see these delightful, tiny penguins is during the day, out on the water where they are fishing. At only 25 cm tall, they are the world's smallest penguin.
